A Monthly Pediatric Video Series Just for You: Let’s Swim!

Let’s Swim!
Anybody else’s kids already hopping into freezing cold pools?? It tells me it’s that time of year again! There’s nothing better than hopping into a cool pool in the middle of a blazing Texas summer. It’s great exercise, it’s outdoors, and it’s great for socialization. Swimming has so many physical and social benefits.
That being said, I hate to be a Debbie Downer, but unintentional injury, specifically drowning, is the leading cause of death in children 1-4 (it gives me the chills too). Sooooo, if you’re wondering why my 6,4,and 2 year olds look like highlighters when they swim, it’s because visibility in the water is key when monitoring swimming children. A suit the same color as the bottom of a pool will not stick out the way neon does (it makes for faster scanning for parents).
Also, please teach your kids to swim! Parent-toddler preschool swim lessons beginning 1+ can provide invaluable skills, and swim lessons 4+ are a must.
For babies, make sure you stay within arm’s length around water and if you have a pool, fence it in with a self-latching, self-closing gate. For teenagers, talk to them about never swimming alone and teach them how to identify rip currents in natural bodies of water.
Check out my short YouTube video and see the differences in swimsuit colors in pools and lakes yourself!
Sincerely,
Dr. Day
